the supply of sufficient water resources to cover their increasing water
supply demands. Therefore, these countries need water strategies that
have to take into account alternative measures to cope with this situation.
Wastewater reuse is one of the essential options MEDA countries have
to consider for the development of their national water policies and
strategies.
This conference will discuss appropriate and non-conventional wastewater
treatment technologies, operation and maintenance, health and environmental
aspects, socioeconomic aspects, policy guidelines, regulations and standards
of wastewater treatment and reuse and sustainable urban drainage systems.

The “Use of renewable energies in European lakes regions”
is the focal point of the first Solar Lakes Conference which will

Managing rivers with climate change and expanding populations
Brisbane's acclaimed Riversymposium celebrates the ecological and social
values of riversby examining world's best practice in river and watershed
management and providing an international forum for science, research,

Since its inception in 1998, Riversymposium has quickly established
itself as oen of the premier events on both the Australian and international
calendar for river basins managers and policy makers. The symposium
attracts on average 500 attendees from 38 countries - 40 of these are
assited delegates from developing nations.
The Symposium highlights the key relationships between institutions,
science, business and the community as it showcases better river management.
2006 Program :
The state of rivers will continue to be of paramount importance in a

2006 : Forests for Water, Lycksele (Sweden)
This international seminar organised by the LIFE-Environment project
"Demonstration of opportunities on forest land to support the implementation
of the Water Framework Directive" (LIFE03 ENV/S/000601) is concerned
with how forests and forestry in Europe can contribute to the implementation
of the EU water framework directive and its goals.
Themes include: How can participatory approaches to river basin management
be used at different spatial scales? How can forests and forestry contribute
to risk prevention and restoration of water related ecosystems? How
can forests and forestry contribute to improved water quality?
The seminar is aimed at all those involved with forests and water, including
staff of forest or water administrations and other public organisations,
forest owner associations, forest enterprises and contractors, NGOs
engaged with forests and/or water and educational and scientific institutions.
The four themes of the seminar will be covered by indoor presentations
and discussions (1.5 days) and field excursions to sites in the Vindel-
and Öreälven river basins (1.5 days). The venue is Hotell
Lappland in Lycksele, a town by the river Umeälven in Northern
Sweden.

The goal of this conference is to focus specialists' interest in order
to answer the question: ‘Is it possible to fight and especially

The WFD is a
hot issue for water management in
all countries of the European Union. Especially
the impacts of the WFD on water management in
rural areas can be far-reaching, as agriculture
is one of the main pressures to the aquatic
environment in both Poland and the Netherlands.
This seminar will focus on Polish and Dutch
experiences with WFD implementation in this field.
The seminar will
be held in Falenty, 13 km from
the centre of Warsaw. It is organised by the
Polish Association for Water Management SITWM, in

Les crues et inondations
extraordinaires de mai -
juin 1856, dues à une alternance d’averses
d’origine océanique et méditerranéenne,
ont
concerné principalement les bassins versants des
fleuves Loire et Rhône et leurs affluents ainsi
que certains affluents de la Garonne et de la
Seine, soit près des deux tiers du territoire métropolitain,
simultanément.
Elles ont été
également sensibles sur le Pô et le Rhin supérieur.
Pour la première
fois en France, une action
politique et législative a suivi cet événement
naturel.
A l’occasion
de l’anniversaire des crues de 1856
en France et Europe, 150 ans après, la SHF, la
DIREN Rhône-Alpes, la DIREN Centre, la DIREN Midi
Pyrénées et l’AFPCN organisent une grande
manifestation sur ces crues, et d’autres grandes
crues historiques en France et en Europe.
Objectifs :
Présenter
les aspects physiques des processus
météorologiques, pluviométriques, hydrologiques
et hydrauliques, leur approche historique et
scientifique ; les aspects sociaux, économiques,
politiques, les plans de secours seront abordés
en s’appuyant sur des situations plus récentes.
Des représentants de pays européens exposeront
les conséquences comparables de crues extrêmes

Conference Programme:
The Conference
will focus on policy and on best
practice – science – policy aspects of flood risk
management in Europe and the EU flood action
programme. The key topic at the conference will
be the EC’s Proposal for a European Parliament
and Council Directive on the assessment and management of floods.
Aims and objectives of the Conference:
The purpose of
the Conference is to raise
awareness of the risk of floods taking into
account challenges resulting from climate change,
to provide an overview on strategies taken in
different river basins and countries as well as
outlining the need of proper risk management
based on experiences of recent floods. The
Conference will aim to give an overview of the
current state of play of the European response to
the challenge of floods. Particular attention
will be given to the European Commission’s Flood
Action Programme and its legislative proposal.
The findings of the Conference will provide
inputs to the on going work on a European Flood Action Programme.

Conference for Disaster Reduction in January 2005, the UN Secretary

has called for global warning systems covering all countries and all
hazards.
Early Warning
is a major element of disaster risk reduction. Ideally it
should prevent any loss of life and reduce the economic losses to
a minimum
in the face of natural disasters such as floods, storms, tsunamis
or
droughts. It is more than just a prediction, a complete and effective
early
warning system comprises a chain of interlinked elements: risk knowledge,
